Prepared specimens + broke camp. Drove to El Oasis + turned east for 5 miles to Cargos. Drove 1/2 miles more to east to look for palm forest reported by J.T. Marshall. Found nothing but mosquito desert as along R. 15. Had lunch + went back to El Oasis. Bought gas + drove to Hermosillo. Asked directions to Nacori Chico + other towns recommended by J.T. Marshall as Five-stripped Sparrow locaters.
Took road about 6 km south of town leading to La Colorado. This apparently was non-existent town, but we found Mazatan. Asked more directions here + decided to go our own way.
mi. & Mazatan vegetation became much greener + more lush. An Acacia-type tree became dominant, + country is hilly. I finally found a rocky hill + stopped. Checked out pair of Douglas Quail + at least 1 Five-stripped Sp. John recorded some songs + we decided to stay here for night.
Had supper, wrote notes, + went to bed.
Area 15 mi N of El Oasis had rain in past week or so.
