July 11 road to east of main highway. (crossed out). Rufous-wing Sparrows - common here & odd singing. ?? collected show no sign of breeding, but one had a slightly enlarged ovary. Birds occur in pairs & are spaced out on territories.
Very interesting to note rufalos occurring where the only vegetation is shrubs - there is no herbaceous layer at all - in marked contrast to Wilmut Rd locality in Tucson. Birds seem to be as dense or denser here than at Tucson.
To bed at 0840.
July 12 18 mi. SE Oasis to 20 mi. E Mojatam, Sonora 40676.0 21 Oasis - 40694.
Up at 0500. Had breakfast & into field. I spent first two hours recording Rufous-wing Sparrow songs. Recorded at least four birds & a duetting pair. Threw out to observe & collect. Discovered that when approached a singing ?? will usually fly to join its mate. Was able to collect two pair in this way. One nest-building + other probably w/ completed nest, but I didn't find it.
Hummingbirds (Broad-billed) common about flowers of Cestillo. Found pair of Black-tailed Gnatcatchers feeding a partly grown Cowbird.
Pyrrhuloxia common in pairs. Watched Cactus Wren laying grass stem to partly completed nest.
