24 H.H. 1963 Journal July 11 Tucson, Arizona to 18 mi. n. El Oasis, Sonora, Mexico mileage 40487.8 (0730) left Tucson at 0745. Drove straight to Nogales. Arrived about 9 am. Bought gas + prepared to cross border. First stop right at border is to obtain tourist cards only. Drive 4 miles south of town to Advance for baggage inspection + car permit. For $1.00 each the boss & flukey were going to let us go through unchecked until we mentioned having shotguns. They sent us back down the road about ½ mile to be lowered thru-off. While there check at consulate in Arizona where lady tells us we need letters from Dept. of War to bring in guns. After getting photos back to car general who fixes us up with permits for nothing - usually is $6 in consulate. Finished at border by 1230. Start down highway & stop in oak parkland for lunch (Quercus emoryi). Soon vegetation becomes mesquite woodland to open mesquite. There are some areas of irrigation where crops are grown. Most of mesquite areas are heavily overgrazed + places we stopped 31 miles N. of Magdalena I found 6-7 dead cows. From mi. N El Oasis to camping site we found Amorphila caryoli to be common roadside bird. Can hear songs all along road. Stopped two more places & made camp at 2½. As short
