L6W01F 1963 Journal July 7 - 14 mi. N of Tuxar we found colony of singing or Cassin Sparrows (see species accounts). The country thru here was good grassland but now is overgrown with mesquite coming in. Drove to Achte & had lunch on school steps. Then gravel road to Columbus. Saw Seeded Quail, Horned Larks, Desert Sparrows, Common Nighthawks (4), + Golden Eagle along road. Drove back to Silver City via Deming. Just south of Deming hit dust storm + at Deming ran into rain storm that occurred at least Silver City. Raining season has started here. Back in Silver City at 1730. Prepared specimens. July 8 Silver City, New Mexico to Graham Mts near Safford, Arizona. Packed car preparatory to leaving Silver City. Left at 1600 after buying few groceries, gas, + screening. Drove south west on 180 to just north of Lordsburg. Listened 5 miles north of Lordsburg for Cassin Sparrows - no luck. Took U.S. 70 to R. 82. 8 mi. NW of Lordsburg on 70 found group of territorial singing or Cassin Sparrows. Drove 82 thru Virden where saw 1 or Postailed Grackle on west edge of town. More grackles were heard behind a cafe on west edge of Duncan, Arizona. Continued on 70 to Safford + turned south on 666. 10 mi. South we turned to west on 366. Road is gravel
