July 3 Signal Mountain, Grant Co., New Mexico.
Drove up to Signal Mt. from Silver City about 0500.
Had flat tire on way. Arrived in conifer forest at
about 0600. Birded for a half hour then
In response to Piping Owl imitation following birds came in:
Downy Woodpecker, Western Tanager, Hermit Thrush,
Pygmy Nuthatch, Wk-62. Nuthatch, Audubon Warbler,
Robin, Hairy Woodpecker.
Further up road came to area of Douglas Firs
+ aspen with locust, Acer + understory shrubs.
This is good area for Western Flycatcher Red-
faced Warblers. John collected two Cardellinia
+ 2 or 3 Pomaceis blemei. Also saw a ? O. t. feeding
? recently fledged young, Apparently a southern
finding record for the species.
James carniaps had full-grown young nesting
in family groups + I found a nest in road-cut
containing 2 1/2 gray young.
Also saw young Rufous-sided Towhee which
was in midst of postpreusal molt.
See notes under Puro gambeli + Cardellinia for
postpreusial molt records.
Left mountain about [illegible] 0830. Back to Silver
City at 0925. Prepared specimens. Spent rest of day
shopping, getting equipment repaired etc.
