July 2 Red Lodge, Grant Co., to Silver City, Grant Co., New Mexico
Up at 0515 after night of high winds that tried their
best to blow tent over. Had breakfast & then into field.
Walked thru arrowweed, cottonwoods (Populus fremontii),
to a species of Salix along banks of Colo River. Common
birds are: Bewick Wren, Cardinal, Abert Towhee,
House Finche, Lesser Goldfinch. Most are ubiquitous
throughout habitat. Towhees leave young on the
wing & apparently independent, at tho still in
family groups. Two ♀♀ collected both had
recently ripened follicles - second nestings.
A cowbird ♀ had an egg in the oviduct &
at least 2 ruptured follicles. Not possible to
determine if bred earlier or not. Collected this
♀ from a group of 4 - 2 cock + 2 ♀♀. Seemed to be
foraging (or drinking) at edge of river as two pairs.
Robins were singing in riparian vegetation.
Cardinals, Yellow-billed Cuckoo both singing. Seems
to be late breeding here in comparison to some
areas we have visited.
Shucked & skeletonized specimens. Had level r
packed car. Headed for Silver City. Arrived &
drove past New Mexico Western University. Drove
up to Dale Zimmerman's house where the Leonard
Oakleys are staying while Dale is in Africa. Plan to
stay here a day or two.
