July 1 - Heard tapping of woodpecker on dead tree. When located was an adult Acorn Woodpecker with head sticking out of hole in dead pine. Mouth open & panting as I approached. Stayed in nest until I was 55 feet away. Contents of nest unknown.
Saw Ash-throated Flycatcher flying in direct line down canyon with food in bill. Heard young calling. Found, at least 2, well-feathered young in hole in oak. Hole was 30 inches above ground & ~ 3" in diameter. Sides of nest hole inside were plastered with fecal material.
Returned to car at 0945. Put specimens until 1100. John still has several to do so I pack car & write notes. Plan to go to Gray Ranch today to see if there are any accessible canyons in Animas Mts. Then to Animas, N.M. for gas + water. Continued on to Lordsburg after John decided not to try to go around the east side of Animas Mts. Had tailpipe put back on - $8.51 - then had supper. Drove out 70-90 from Lordsburg. Took road to Duran & then turn off to Red Rock. After reaching Red Rock continue on gravel road. Take left fork past post office - Forked around with Baptist Church sign & continue to Bridge. Just across Bridge are two "roads" to left. Take either for good camping spots.
