LLWOF 1963. Journal June 30 - This new area is a pine-oak woodland - one of J.T. Marshall's localities for his Birds of Pine-Oak Woodland. Had supper set up camp. At dusk went out for night birds - Loo-weels are common on slopes above the camp. At least one Screech Owl was calling + 2 Elf Owls. Heard sound - rather like jay squall - which right before in Guadalupe Canyon we traced to a young Elf Owl in the nest. July 1 Clanton Canyon, New Mexico up at 0578. Had good breakfast for a change + in field by 0600. Heard Rufous-crowned Sparrow singing + collected 4 @. Found pair of Zone-tailed Hawks calling excitedly just east of camp. John later shot one of these birds. They acted as if nest or young in area. Working up slope of grass, rocks, Yucca, agave, oaks, pine, juniper + manzanita found families (3-6 birds) of Bewick Wrens scattered over terrain. Estimate of 50 - 100 yards average between family bands. Always in areas where some oaks, but they may be scattered. Flock of Bush-tits in oak, juniper woods along stream bed. Estimate 70+ birds. Shot three - two too badly to save. Two had brown eyes - both @.@ + one had light eye- adult female. Scattered pairs of Bridled Titmouse.
