U.S.A. 1963 Journal June 30 Encountered pairs of Cassin Kingbirds about every 100-200 yards - generally in sycamores + on dead, exposed perches. Ash-throated Flycatchers less common + tend to be along edge of riparian + mesquite hillside. Olivaceous Flycatchers generally in pairs - once saw 3 together. Occur in sycamores to other riparian vegetation. Do occur in edge of mesquite. Hooded Orioles spaced, in pairs along canyon. This canyon area has sycamore, juniper, oaks along dry stream bed. On hills above stream is mesquite cactus, Yucca, agave, passers Canyon Wrens + Rufous-crowned Sparrows are calling from hillsides. Rufous-Crowns do come down to canyon floor to forage. Hummingbirds are common, but difficult to identify. They are generally in + around taller trees along stream bed. Returned to camp at 0900 + prepared specimens until 1230. Then wrote notes. By 0830 the birds are very quiet + observing or collecting becomes a matter of chance. At 1330 packed up + drove back to fork in road with sign pointing to Clovisdale. Take this road + cross pass, continue 3-5 miles + just before stream crosses road can turn off to camping area. Cienita Canyon. Arrived at 1520 after losing tailpipe along road.
