June 29 - John watched a Prairie Falcon being harassed by
a pair of Sparrow Hawks.
Prepared specimens + then drove 15 mi. south to
Rodeo + had lunch. Continued on to Douglass, Aug.
Coming in from north take 15th St. to left to go
to Guadalupe Canyon. On gravel road take left
fork then right fork. New Mexico state line is
marked by fence + cattle guard about 1/2 miles
from end of road. At end of road is Johnson ranch.
They were very friendly + readily gave permission
to camp on their land. We camped under large
Sycamoro beside stream bed (dry) just west of
last cattle guard. Decided to move camp 1/2 to
SW. Had supper + set up camp. At dusk hunted
for owls. Found 2 adult Elf Owls feeding a 3/4 grown
young in a 15 foot tree. John collected one adult - stomach
contained remains of grasshoppers. Later I collected
another adult feeding grown young still in nest. Also
found several Scaled Owls in canyon. Collected
one.
