LLWOLF 1963 Journal. June 29 from Cave Creek Canyon to Portal is 5 miles by road. up at 0500. broke camp & had breakfast left [illegible] area at 0545. Mileage 39548.6. Rustler Park to Portal is 16 miles by road. Turned north east of Portal on R.80. Drove to sign pointing to left saying "Cienega Lake" Can see tall trees in distance. Drive back in on this road to fork. Take left fork which ends 150 ft. further at New Mexico Game & Fish area. Walk around this small pond & look for Mexican Duck, Yellowthroats, etc. Scarceness fule areas. Pond is covered in spots with green algae. Area between R.80 & Lake is mesquite - creosote, cypress desert. Hunted this area for 2+ hours. Lucy Warbler is very common. Young are essentially independent, but birds are traveling in groups of 3-8, probably family groups. Cactus Wrens are abundant & I found 1 nest containing 5 young. Young had feathers showing on most parts & most were just emerging from shelter. Young Bell Vireos were begging, but appeared independent. Shot juvenile Crissal Thrasher which apparently was alone. Flushed a Morning Dove from alot tree. As 2nd adult flew out it "fell" to ground & flopped along in injury feigning display. 1 large young were sitting on nest and flew off as I approached.
