June 28 up at 0545 in Cave Creek Recreation area. Camped on south fork trail. had snack for breakfast + then into field. John + I walked up canyon on opposite sides of the stream bed. Vegetation along stream is Sycamore, oaks, + conifers. Above stream on sides of canyon is xeric vegetation, grasses, Yucca, - + very rocky. Heard Rufous-crowned Sparrows singing up there. At flowering Yucca watched at least two species + several individuals feeding. Most seemed to fly back to riparian situation. Along stream bed encountered calling of Trogon elegans. Watched him twice fly up to overhead branch (Heel) + hover while picking something from the foliage. Continued on up trail. Hunted within 1/2 mile of camp along trail returned at 1000. Prepared my seven specimens. Had lunch + spent several hours during heat of the day talking to a Mr. Lockhart, a local resident, former jazz musician, + self-styled writer + historian. He apparently likes endeavors in which one can become seemingly proficient by memorizing large amounts of factual material. At present he claims to be researching for a book dealing with the history of town stone, Arizona. Took malaria pill today.
