June 26 - took K.80 to K.83 turnoff. Went south then Sonoita & went straight rather than turning on K.92. Followed signs to Caveolo (Also Parker Canyon Lake). Go through Caveolo & follow road to Ft. Huachuca. Camped just across line in Cochise Co. Passed thru yucca grassland on K.83. South of Sonoita area is oak grassland (overgrazed), mesquite, & occasionally pinyon-juniper. Area where camped is mesquite, few Emory oak, Sacaton grass. June 27 1 mi. w. Ft Huachuca, Cochise Co., Arizona. in field at 0545. Went back to spot where shot Cy. Lark Sparrow at dusk last night. Area is grazed & fenced grassland with weeds & mesquite. Found 2 singing Bd Botteri Sparrows. Spent until 0745 standing + recording songs of then birds. Then prepared specimens, packed up + headed for Clinicahua Mts. Drove thru Ft. Huachuca + had dinner in Bisbee. Far miles out of Bisbee we continued due east to K.666. Took this to 181 which we followed to base of Mts. Here took gravel road climbing up to Rustler Park in the pines. At Rustler Park we found logging operations with camping prohibited. John collected here for about 1 hour, I just bird-watched after discovering my gun was broken. Took birds with us + headed for Cave Creek Canyon + south fork camping area. Stopped at SW Research Sta. (AMNH)
