June 25 - while I was sitting down watching the thrushen
saw pair of billed flycatchers - at least one bird
foraging on ground like Yellow-shaft.
Found several empty Verdin nests + a grass
tall (actus) when nest. Verdins watched feeding
fled grown young out of nest.
John spent much of morning trying to
record Aimophila carpalis vocalization. He had some
luck, but was not able to record all song types
we have heard. Also much surrounding noise +
winds produced some noise on tape.
John collected six birds + we drove back to llow,
of Arizona to prepare the specimens. Had lunch with
P.T. Gould + two visitors from Los Angeles - one a
Dr.? Green. They are touring high spots of Arizona
looking for exciting birds.
At 1530 John + I went 15 mi. NE of Tucson up the Mt.
Lemmon road to Molino Basin. John collected while
I tried, unsuccessfully, to record Aimophila carpalis
songs. Area here - oak along stream + scattered up
rocky, grassy slopes. John collected 2 Costa Humming birds
from numerous oaks along stream bed. Both were
immature of so. Also saw a pair of Gray Vireos,
in oaks. CD was singing - like Red-eyed Vireo -
+ following F. CD collected. Also a E Rufous-
crowned Sparrow + a 1st yr. of Scott's Oriole.
