June 24 - Tucson area
John tried to set some recordings of Rufous-winged + nest with no success. Birds not singing continuously enough to locate + approach.
Left area at 0830. Returned to Tucson + drove to Univ. of Ariz. campus. Left car to be lubricated. Prepared specimen of A. carpalis collected by P.T. Gould. Dr. J.T. Marshalee is in Mexico City confering with A.R. Philips on Arizona check-list. Unable to find locality for Aimophila quinguistriata just south of border.
Picked up can + returned to house. John trying to locate trunk he had shipped out here two weeks ago.
June 25 Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona.
Arrived at Wilmot Rd. Locality at 0600. Weather clear bright & warm. Slight freeze in early morning to little or none by 0830. Slight haze on mts.
Spent most of morning until 1000 observing various Aimophila carpalis. They seem restricted to areas where cholla is sparse or absent. The dominant shrubs are hackberry + mesquite + the ground cover is absent or grass or Hakopappus.
Spent half an hour watching Curve-billed Thrasher come back to nest. Had a Black-tailed Gnatcatcher try to land on my head or shoulder.
