June 23 - gradually conifers appear. 1st is Arizona
Cypress Then Chihuahua Pine + Alligator Juniper.
Species of oak change also.
At dusk 3: Whip-poor-wills begin calling
from rocky slopes above campground. John
called in one Whistled Owl.
Drove back to Tucson Arrived 9:30 S.D.
June 24 - Up at 4:30 A.M. Picked up Pat Gould + drove out
Benson Hwy to east to w/1st Rd. Go 0.6 mi., N.
of Hwy + park beside road. This is area of
mesquite, cholla, hackberry, palo verde with
glass clumps scattered throughout much of the area.
Most shrubs are leafed out while they were
bare in January + February. Hackberry seems
to be losing it leaves. Cattle are grazing in here
(on east side of road) they were not in Jan - Feb.
Watched thru area until 6:30 - birds are
paired + breeding activity goes from none
(A. calipensis) to young as large as adults (M. cinnamomum)
Cambrel Quail have half grown young following
the adults around.
From 0630 to 0800 tried to net + color - Band Rufous -
wings with no success. Were able to drive a pair to
the act area, but caught neither.
