June 23 Had breakfast just east of Phoenix. Went through Apache Junction and took 80-89 south to Tucson.
Stopped at Tom Mix Well and looked around for 15 min. Continued on to several miles north of Oracle Junction. Walked for short distance thru sparse grassland - mostly Larrea. No A. calyptrio.
Picked up young Curve-billed Thrasher dead on road about 10 miles north of Tucson. Arrived Tucson at 11:00. From Apache Junction to just north of Grace Junction vegetation is mostly mesquite, cholla, palo verde desert. Grass more prominent near Oracle Junction. Skirt west side of mts just north of Tucson.
Spent rest of day in Tucson at 1634 Avenida de Sol at home of relatives of John P. Hubbard. John is going to accompany me on rest of trip.
About 4:30 AM we went north on Wilson Road and continued out Tanque Verde Road to Mt. Lemmon Rd. Drove up to Upper Molino Basin and hiked for 1+ hours. Area is rocky, grassy hillsides with oaks along stream bed. Aimophila ruficeps seemed to be in pairs. Heard several birds singing. Song very similar to the Common Bulbul song. No young were observed. Pairs were spaced out on the hillsides and seemed to be in the most rocky area. (See species list).
On up road to General Hitchcock picnic area.
