LLBxf 1963 Journal Jun 22 - Left Berkeley 830 A.M. (38110.7). drove via 50 to U.S. 99. Down 99 to Bakersfield. Took 466 to Kramer + then turned south via 395 to San Bernadino. took 60,70 east thru Blythe, Calif. howard Phoenix - stopped at entrance to ranch along road about 3 miles east of Wickenburg, Ariz. At 19:57 (8.7 miles west of Blythe) first noted bats flying across road. They were small bats, bet don't know species. Area was dry, rocky desert. At 20:02 (3.2 miles west Blythe) I saw first Chordilla acuticeps for the evening. A few noted in desert areas but most were over agricultural land + congregated along Colorado River just [illegible] of Blythe. Very few animals seen on road after dark - coyote, Dipodomys(?), rabbit. stopped at 2340 PDT. June 23 - 3 miles east Wickenburg, Arizona to Tucson, Ariz. mileage 58880.8 up at 0430 PDT. birded in mesquite, cottonwood area. Lucy Warbler common - some in pairs, others seem to be in flocks. Also special of Vermilion Flycatcher. saw 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk sailing just above top of trees. ? House Finch giving soliciting display. on road at 600 PDT.
