Field notes - Bats.
Dec.10. 1927.
On low hills east of Portello
are many deserted mining tunnels
varying in running horizontally
into the hills and varying
in depth from 50 ft. to 500 ft.
3 Long Eared Bats were
found about 50 ft from entrance,
hanging openly on the rock
ceiling of the tunnel; 2 or 3
more on ground outside. much
evidence of pack rats in tunnels.
Dec.11.
Returned to mine to check black
rat sets; No rats; closer examination
disclosed four small brown bats
crowded into covies.
I was unable to wake one of
them from the covee and left it
fifteen minutes to get some
small wire. On returning the
bat had moved. I soon located
it on the roof but had some
trouble in taking it with a flash
dlight. This indicates that they
are quite active and not in
a semi-hibernating stupor. There
is no evidence any where of
available insect food.
