HG Weston 1945 Journal March 18 Pierce Ranch, Tomales Point, Marin County, California. cont abaloneS. WE only brought back 5 that were over 7 inches (the minimum size). 10 + were thrown back because they were too small. We were a little late for low the tide, a -.2 ft one, so abalone hunting wasn't very good. While climbing over the rocks, getting soaked doing it, I saw the following species of birds: California gull, black oystercatcher (1), Band cormorant (5), harlequin duck (1+). After eating a late lunch around 2 p.m., we returned to skinning mammals. We ate 2 abalones for lunch. They were very good. Late in the afternoon we set out some more traps and returned to eat some more abalone. We are eating the abalone fried. After dinner [illegible] we spent the evening analysing 72 barn owl pellets we gathered in the haybarn here. The pellets were soaked in water which softened them and removed all of the hair. We found the following species of small mammals represented in the remains: species number present % of total Scapanus latimanus 1 .4% Neotrichus gibbsii 6 2.4% Sorex vagrans 78 31.5% Thomomys bottae 6 2.4% ReithrodontomyS megalois 22 8.9% Peromyscus maniculatus 112 45.3% Microtus californicus 12 4.9% Zapus orarius 3 1.3%
