July 12 Twentynine Palms, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
blew E. About 4:45 p.m. Dr. Miller drove up in his car. After eating and deciding to camp right here for the night, Dr. M. and I each went out on the flat just south. There we each set out about 60 Museum Special Snap Traps. I set my traps around low scrubby bushes. The floor consists of gravel-sand mixture, white in color. Lots of bats and nighthawks flew around the trees along the oasis just at dusk. None were shot however. Dr. M. brought some more used snap traps. These we will try in hopes of having better luck with the mammal trapping. After setting my traps out I came back and wrote some field notes. I turned in about 9 p.m.
This evening I heard coyotes calling, the first time since the night of June 30 at Quail Spring.
July 13- Dr. Miller was up at 4 a.m. Boy what [illegible]. I did it also the first few mornings but can't do it anymore? I'm too darn much of a physical wreck. I got up at 4:30 a.m. and ran my trap line. 60 traps set and I caught 5 Dipodomys merriami and 2 Perognathus. Dr. Miller with a similar number of traps caught 6
