Vladimir 1988 Journal 16 Sept West Slope Walker Pass, @ 4600 ft. The purpose of this trip is to collect Dipodomys panamintinus mohavensis from the same locality collected by Carr and Grinnell in 1911. Genetic data is our goal. Left Berkeley @ 8:30, route: I-5 to 58 through Bakersfield, to 178 through Onyx on onward towards Walker Pass. Grinnell + Carr described Taft's Station as a site where Lonesome Creek creek crosses the road. Grinnells map indicates a trap site about 1/4 mile South of the creek. We easily found where Lonesome creek crosses the road (using USGS topographical maps confirmed 4600 ft). Today there are about 12 homes scattered in this flat area where we had hoped to trap. After talking with a resident it became apparent there are no Dipodomys on this side (S) of the road. Domestic dogs and cats keep pops to a minimum. The only small mammal present is Spengsbiler
