Baltanez 1988 Journal The surrounding hills are dominated by Ephedra, Eriogonum fasciculatum and grasses. Some ridges or exposed areas are dominated by Yucca whippleyi. Today was very warm, about 75°F at dawn and a high of 105°F (95°F in the shade). The wind blew in the afternoon. Since it is a full moon, the moon is up from dusk to dawn. During the day the San Joaquin Antelope Squirrels are active, they are very fast, red-bust + coarsely haired squirrels. They frequently shake or whip forward the white cottoned tail they hold above their backs. These animals also sit up on their haunches. The body temperatures of these animals must be very high, or else they would expend too much water in evaporative cooling. They are active all day, regardless of temp. They even seem to avoid the cooler morning hours. Black-nosed leopard lizards
