1988 Journal Along the Elkhorn Plains Rd Mile 12 we saw 2 San Joachin Kit Fox. They are about the size of a large Jack rabbit. These foxes we each in the road, once the lights were on then, they would squat back with ears up then run forward in a gallop. Each one ran at about 20mph along sides the road. Because of their small size they can make small (tight) turns. At mile 12 we saw a Fresno Kangaroo Rat (D. nitroides) sitting by the side of the Rd under an Ephedra bush. About mile 13+ again at about 16, saws a Giant Kangaroo Rat (D. ingens). One just sat in the light, the other hopped for cover. Found Bernie @ 0200. Sueey Payton, Natalie + I slept but were awakened repeatedly by D.ingens (camp rat) that would scratch at or hit a plastic drum with oatmeal in it. Elkhorn Plains 27 Aug Bernie + I got up @ 0500 to check his traps. A D.ingens scurried off from alongside my van and got out. We checked a 10 x 10
