Journal 26 Aug I'm route from Berkeley to Carrizo Plains, SLO Co., to meet Benny Payton. Left Berkeley about 4/600 and drove down I-5. Central Valley was over 100° F. From Hwy 580, to Hwy 58 (to Bakersfield) only saw one kestrel, 3 mourning doves, and next to a green, cultivated field, one black shouldered kite. Drove Hwy 58 west over summit of Temblor Range. The valley is a grass land while the last 1000 ft of the summit of Oak-Juniper woodland. At base of summit (on W side) turn left onto 7 mi Rd and then left again onto unpaired Elkhorn Plains Rd. This Rd crosses the Panoramic Hills in a SE direction + leads to the Elkhorn hills. Stay on main (graded) road. At about 6.6 miles the rd goes left up into the foothills. Once up in the foothills take a right at the next fork (head across the faces of the foothills + not further into them). At 20 miles the camp is .5 mile N road.
