area was scattered clumps of chernozem
with grassland in between. Found
burrows + pit caches. The soil at
all 3 trapping spots is from conglomerate
parent material. The soil surface is
hard, packed with rounded (alluvial)
stones, and loose stones cover the
ground in many areas.

Line A (15 traps) produced 2 D. calif. and
2 Peromyscus truei, Line B only 1 D. cal.
and line C (20 traps) captured only
4 P. truei. There are D. cal. at line C,
but none were trapped. Found 1
trap with a P. truei in it and also
the white tail tip of a D. cal. Both
would have had to have been
foraging at the entrances or in the
trap at the same time.

Trapping for D. cal., set 40 traps

canic rocks on the surface, and seems
to be mostly lava flows. The soil
surface is almost always covered
with rocks, from pebble to boulder.
