Banning 25 Oct curious to know if the San Gorgo- mis River (~5 miles S) ever flowed north into the san jacinto valley. Also noted is the recent uplift evident by the downcutting and headward erosion in all the creeks + streams . Set 40 traps 1 mi N. Banning at 2640 ft on hillside that is the northern mouth of the San Gorgo- mis River ( head of 8th St). The vegetation is Eriogonum, Artemisia californica, and Adenostoma as dominants with Bromus Arena grasses. Area is disturbed. Sandy loam of sedimentary (granite parent material) nature. Some iron rich soils scattered about. Banning Bench (topog) is likely a granitic outcrop forming a steep W. bank to the river. The San Andreas Rift Zone lies either in # the S.Gorgonis River Canyon, or crosses it near its mouth. Trap (1 crosses the hill ~1°. 26 Oct caught 9 Pocket mice & 8 deer mice. Not 1 Dipso. Will move line to shelter cover.
