rocky and hilly. For 4 miles past old man Mtns it is still rocky and hilly, yet some Yucca brevifolia and shidi gero are coming in. The granite Mtns form a significant rain shadow to the north. range broad bajadas sit between the Granite and the Providence Mtns, especially on the flanks of the Providences. Working up along the E side of the Providence. Clipper and Fenner Valleys are broad bajadas. Saw 1 loggerhead Shrike before turning off of Essex Rd onto Black Canyon Rd. Wild horse canyon (to west) looks like a low pass. Woods Mtns cross the Fenner and Hanfair Valleys (though fairly contiguous). Junipers appear on the NE side of Hole-in-the-wall. Granite Wells and Meccodia can- yon are also low passes. Junipers come in at an elevation about 1/2 way up Table Mtn. By the head of Gold Valley, no more Cressote. Now get Adenostoma, Atriplex, Juniper & other shrubs on the fine, bouldery stream soil. Gold Valley opens to
