20 April 3 1/10 miles W and 1/2 mile N Temblor
Peaks, Elkhorn Plain, San Luis
Obispo Co., Calif. 2500 ft.
From Hwy 58 (178 on 1959 USGS topos)
drive out 21.7 miles S on the Elkhorn
road; this is 8.7 miles S of the
power lines that cross the
road. The area we trapped
began 4/10 of a mile north
of Elkhorn Road. It is a
perennial stream channel.
From the road, the channel
runs down from a canyon w/
a steep face to the west & a
more shallow, rolling face
to the east. Going upstream the
channel is wide (20-60 feet) with
several (2-4) ravines on either
side. Further upstream the
channel forks. The N. fork runs
up into a large canyon w/
a high ridge behind it to the
north. The NE fork runs towards
a dome shaped hill (2952 ft)
to the east. We camped near
the topography changes from
the gradual alluvial fan
