Villablanca 1991 Journal April Callender Substation, 7/10 mile S of Hwy 1 and 3/10 mile E. Railroad tracks, Nipomo mesa, Calif. 120 ft San Luis Obispo Co. Take Hwy 101 S. from San Luis Obispo, to Arroyo Grande, then follow Hwy 1 through A.G. and out towards the desert. Follow Hwy 1 (S) until you make a 90 degree left turn (straight is Callender Black Lake Rd) and then a 90 degree Right turn. About 1/8 mile from Callender Rd will be a utility substation for electrical power. The area trapped is a small depression S SW of the substation, and the next depression SE. We set out 92 traps at 10 meter intervals. We set 52 traps in fairly open shrubs cover and 40 traps in an area of open sand with few shrubs. No signs of K-rats were seen in the shrubby areas and none were captured there, though pocket gopher signs were a constant. On the area (a small ridge of fairly clay soil except for herbs.
