5 mi. S. E Murphy Oroyhee (B. Idaho)
May 27, 1935
Headed Grosbeaks were conspicuously present
in the canyon bottom along the stream.
A Golden Eagle soared above the cliffs
on the south side of the canyon for
a few minutes, but I do not think it was
nesting here.
Davis shot an Olive Rocked Thrush in
the canyon below the road, but we did not
see any where we were. A Mountain Quail
was heard uttering its throaty "querck" from
the rocks on the north side of the canyon
at dusk.
May 28, 1935.
This morning I skinned two Cistella leucodon
and one C. organus all taken the day before.
We packed up and left at about 10:30
heading northward. We stopped a couple
of times to collect plants of the region so
reached Murphy after noon. The eggs of
the Linnet's nest were hatched and the
Say Phoebe's nest contained only 4 young
instead of 5. Two of the birds had retained
the bands put on a few days before, the
others were missing.
We again took the road westward from
Murphy, passed the shanty in which we
saw them. Cistella were scarce and exceedingly shy.
At Payette we heard that Cistella dahoonensis was
common in the open fields south of town 88
