Strong. 1921. Kispin's Valley, 130. 286. ♂ [illegible] magnolia, Aug. 20. 1921. 257 [illegible]. Geothlypis trichas occidentalis, " " 288 ♀ Gypaetes nigra borealis, " " 289 ♀ Astur attencapillus H.S.S. " 18 " Sat. Aug. 20. – Cloudy and overcast as usual, clearing slightly toward evening. Went hunting all morning down the river thru the brush, fierce going and practically nothing to make it worth while. Shot two Sparrow Hawks and an adult Rusty Blackbird, the latter with much red in his plumage. Also secured a young Yellowthroat and a Magnolia Warbler. Down near the river there was a large flock of about fifty Black and Vaux Swift circling low over the newly cut hay fields and I secured one female Black Swift, mottled with white near the vent. Saw and shot at an Osprey which flew over me, escorted by several Swifts, but failed to land. He was screaming shrilly as we circled. This is the first one I have seen. Also saw two birds in the distance I was almost sure were Mourning Doves, but could not get close enough to make sure. Saw several young Geese coming home. Put up specimens all afternoon. This evening Mr. Swarth shot a Horned Lark which sat on the top of a fir tree in front of the cabin just as we were going to bed. Went on an unsuccessful hunt this evening. Mr. Swarth shot a Wilson's Snipe from a pair that flew over today.
