Sept5 3/2mi, E, 1/2mi N, McHenry Mt., 1900 ft, San Luis Obispo Co., Calp.
several pairs apart. Bill's were baited & walnut & mine
with oat meal.
Sept6. Delhilles & I left for the waterholes up the canyon at about
4:45 a.m. In an attempt to get Mt. Zuald, we stationed
ourselves at the upper series of pools at 5:15 and I
waited for an hour but no quail came. I heard
valley zuald behind me but they didn't come
to the water. The Mt. Zuald called several times
up canyon from us and apparently watered up
there. Collected a juncos & berriels on the way back. After shinning again went up the canyon
to set traps (mus.spec) by the water in hopes of
getting sheaws. Set 20 traps, 3 pairs apart at each
series of pools. Used walnut bait. Bill collected the
traps we set out last night. Mine - baited & oatmeal
had 2 Dipo's and 1 Perownysers & his baited & walnut
had 1 Dipo & 2 Perownyers, 2 of the 3 perownyers
were turni & 1 Boylei's but they got mixed & we don't
know who caught which. Got a sulu parus and
a chipmunk on the second trip up canyon.
Sept7 left camp at 5:45 am & went to the canyon to wait
for Mt Zuald. Delhilles preceded me & waited at a rock
while above where we were yesterday. Arrived
at 6:15 & waited until 7:30 when I collected my
mus. spec. traps (1 rapunisian, 2 P.boyli's ) then heard
Mt. and valley zuald calling so I went up the
north side of the canyon i. waited. Saw 4 or 5 birds
