Alum Creek Campground, 6400', Mineral Co., Nevada
After lunch hiked up the canyon that goes to the
west of The campsite and gave more seminars. On
the way back some students found two feathers, and
then we spotted a large nest about 30 feet up in
a Yellow Pine. Decided it was a Scoshawk nest.
Several students climbed the cliff above it and
reported two eggs, one of them with a crack in it,
Got back to camp, skooked dinner. Went out for
owls as it got dark, calling for Flamulated
Owls, falsettts "poop" call; changes in pitch as they
get closer, and adds two syllable lower note.
One larger owl, Horned or Long-eared, flew over.
Did call in several Flamulated Owls but none
came in very close. Did track one down and
climbed a steep slope to the tree it was in.
Finally saw it briefly when it flew out of
the tree. Heard Poorwills on the way
back to camp. Had also seen Common
Nighthawks earlier as it got dark, Look a bit
like bats because they were fluttering, but then
straightened out to swoop more. Got to bed after
1:00am.
