Alum Creek Campground, 6400', Mineral Co., Nevada
rare for Nevada. Stopped at Walker Lake to
swim. The water was clearer than two years
ago and quite nice for swimming. Ate dinner
at El Capitan in Hawthorne, then drove
to Alum Creek Campground. Sang around the
campfire until ~11pm.
June 5
Rote up at ~6am. Ate breakfast and hiked up
to overlook the canyon. Yellow Pines on altered
andesite; piƱon, not much juniper, a few
Limber Pines. Carson Range that we saw
yesterday on the drive over is the last
outpost of the Sierra. It has most of the
trees and some Sierran birds. The Wasatch
Range where we are now has some Sierran
forms and some interior forms. The three
new records for the range two years ago were
Pygmy Nuthatch, Roshawk, and Broad-tailed
Hummingbird. Hiked up the canyon to the
area of dense Yellow Pines. Along the way saw
a Canyon Wren under an overhang near a little
water in the creek. This is typical of the areas
where they are found; Saw Pygmy Nuthatches, at
least three, in the Yellow Pines. Set up two long
mist nets near the creek with shrubs. Sat down
to give seminars and in the course of the
morning caught a Red-breasted Sapsucker and a
Virginia Warbler. Came back down for lunch,
