Two of the O. californicus were caught within 10 feet
of the creek, which had water in it. The other
two were caught one on each hillside above the
creek. Again, add ~2 miles to get the distance
below Bodfish, about 11.8 mi.

When Don threw one of the dead mice off to the
side of the road a small owl, Pygmy Owl,
flew down and grabbed it and flew with it to a
live oak and sat there eating it. It was only
about 15 meter from where we were standing. The owl
was small, ~8 or 9 inches, brown with white streaks on
the breast, some spotting on the sides, dark on the
wings, a dark line on each side at the back of the
