Mar 31 To pick up the traps, caught 1 P. crinitus which escaped, Directions to get to Darwin Falls: North from Irone on Irone Hwy or Irone-Wildrose Rd. Follow sign to Death Valley via Hwy 190. When get to 190 turn west rather than east. After Banamint Springs "resort" go 1.1 miles, then turn left onto gravel road at the place where the water pipe turns away from the road. Go 2.8 miles to a right turn off the main gravel road Another 0.1 miles to place where cable marks end of vehicle traffic, Checked traps at Surprise Canyon Chris Weich Camp, Surprise Canyon, 3 mi E, 2 mi NE Ballarat, ~2000', Inyo Co., Calif. 16 Peromyscus eremicus 2 dead, 14 saved 1 dead April 4 1977 1 live to Zoo/07 This is the site where previously (July 1974) Don had caught many O. maniculatus, many P. crinitus, and also the unknown Peromyscus, P. eremicus at that time was only found out on the valley floor in creosote brush (Larrea). We drove out to Ridgcrest for lunch and back to them Miracle Hot Springs area to try once more since we didn't think we would make it over to Los Padres Natl Forest in time to set traps before dark.
