Panamint Valley, Inyo Co., Calif.
Mar.30 delagitated old buildings in Ballarat.
Follow the signs to Panamint City, which means turn left at store in Ballarat, drive 2.2 miles North, then turn east at a white rock that points to Panamint City. Drive 4.6 miles up fairly steep, rocky gravel road to Chris Wick Camp, ~2000' elevation. This is a grove of Cottonwood trees and cattails in a pond area. We went up above following the stream, let 40+20=60 large Sherman along stream under vegetation, 20 large Shermans around pond area, and 50 small Shermans on hill above stream in horsetails. Had lunch and then drove back to Darwin Falls Canyon. John went out to look for herps and set 3am traps above the pools in the canyon. Don and I processed 22 mice. Took tissues and blood. Realized that the test tubes didn't fit in the centrifuge, so the blood sat overnight in test tubes and the plasma had separated fairly well by morning. These samples were put in the liquid N2 tank. It was cold and windy and raining and it got dark while we were stuffing mice, so some of the specimens leave something to be desired. We made 11 skins and the rest skeletons only. After dinner John went back up the canyon and found two more toads.
Mar.31 Got up at 6:45 am. Had breakfast, finished the blood samples, and packed the car while John went
