M.F. Smith 1977 JOURNAL Panamint Valley, Inyo Co., Calif. Mar.29 Pointed snout then boreas. We finally found some more toads in a pool below the half drum of water. The toads were floating under the green algae in the pond. I grabbed some and John waded in for the others (3 toads from this pond). On our way back down to the camp we heard noises that we later decided were made by wild burros. At dusk we had also set another 20 large thermands downstream from camp. Mar.30 Got up at 7 am and checked traps: 1 Peromyscus maniculatus in rocks on hillside above pond (dead - not saved) 7 Peromyscus crinitus (6 live, 1 escaped) in willows and above along rock face and in talus slopes small mouse, small ears, long tail, not as bare looking a tail as I might have expected From the 20 traps downstream from camp along dry wash edges away from stream: 1 Peromyscus crinitus under tamarisk bush died saved + live 2 Dipodomys merriami 4 toed for 10z class Drove over to Surprise Canyon to set traps. This is the area where Don had trapped before and gotten the Peromyscus whose specific identification was unclear. Directions to get to Surprise Canyon: To north from Iriona on Iriona Hwy (also called Iriona-Wildrose Rd). Turn east on gravel road to Ballarat (4 1/2 miles to store in Ballarat). Mostly
