Nov.24 Southern Calif. Trip San Gabriel Mts. LAG, Calif.
Left Berkeley at 5:45am Mileage 80845, accompanied by Dorothy and John Calla
Drove to San Gabriel Mts N+ E of Sunland, 81248
Set out 100 folding Sherman traps in chaparral at Switzer Station.
This area burned in 1954. Set 40 just up the road
at the "Jaming Canyon" sign. We were questioned by a Dept. of Interior officer about the exempt car but he was satisfied with our explanation. Set 27 folding and 23 non-folding at Short Cut Saddle. It was getting dark and we realized we were getting low on gas, so we drove back down to La Canada. Couldn't find the campground at Millard that was marked on the Forest Service map. Then we decided to eat out and drive back up to Chilo, but couldn't find any restaurants open on Thanksgiving Eve.
Finally drove to Upper Chilo campground. Got there at ~ 9:00 pm and cooked dinner there. Went to bed at ~ 10:00 pm.
Nov.25 Nov.26 81354.5 Got up at 6:30am and had breakfast. Got to Short Cut Saddle at 8:00am. Had very good luck there.
Out of 50 traps we caught the following animals:
6 Peromyscus californicus +1 juv, dead
5 Peromyscus truei +1 juv, dead
2 Peromyscus eremicus +1 juv, dead
for a total of 16 Peromyscus.
These were in Manzanita on one side of road, mixed chaparral with Manzanita + Yucca on the other side.
