M.F. Smith 1976 JOURNAL Rustic Canyon, Santa Monica Mt., Los Angeles, Ca. Calif. Aug. 18 Had breakfast at Rudis and then went to Juvisne to load our gear. Got dry ice to pack well the carcasses in styrofoam containers. Had lunch at Newport Beach + drove to Rustic Canyon to meet Smiley Shields. He showed us where to trap and we set 80 traps in mature chaparral, hadn't been burned since 1927 according to Smiley. The area was an old estate so there are lots of non-native plantings: Olive trees, junip, etc. Set the traps at the edge of the hillside across the creek from Shields house and along the creek bed under sycamores. Finally reached Jerry Bucke and drove to Tarzana to stay with her.
