Holmes,R. 1963 C. melanotos 48. 9 July Barrow, Alaska On the shovail c. plot - floe 1 Mufolow syn were recorded: 1/7 45 (matt?; perhaps sec. 4); 1/139, 1/140, 1/120 (mud? 8. 4?), 1/128, +1/148. They would feed for a while & in several cases commingled a & Muted from nest. She would remain somewhat separate. In 2 cases, a & was seen to chase a 0?. Both times, She raised herself (incl. tail & folded wings, legs), lowered chest toward ground, gave 2 call note & dashed at Mr 0? - the fool flewed, gave no response or cackled - she flew after him for 30-40' - he came back. On 8/9 when encounter had made no advance forced Me 4's were not believed to have been settled in Mr area. The Mz did not appear to be in good breeding condition - as judged by most development & behaviour. Probably the 4's were either chased from nest - or chased away from the nest - a likely Mr, as a escape for a aggressive drive - after having been driven from the nest. On 9-10 enough noted wherever painted > 35 - four to five - 6" great, fur are darkest at the other + a short chin with no beards following close
