RT4 1963 C. melanotus 31. 25 June Barrow, Alaska nest #5. hood moved off the nest. I was standing about 60' away from the nest cup. The 8' flew in, landed, kept one wing at the vertical (pointing off to the side), during this time - the tail raised to a half-cocked position. The wing was then lowered (relaxed) - The bird kept calling "burrr" - after 3-4 s' flew off - the 8' flew off & displayed territorially. Activity was low today & somewhat confusing. 8's were not defending our drum as vigorously as they were 4 days ago. 8's from adjacent limbs would come across the boundary - before he would be chased. One was with several individual 8's who were moving through the area. In one case, 3 8's were feeding near in 10' of each other, after about 5m, one 8' - who apparently was no parent - shoved out the other 7. - Thus, there seems to be a more casual atmosphere in the pectoral population & the territorial system is beginning to break down. Also, there was a decrease in activity during day-sunset by 1800 - hardly any bird was displaying.
