Holmes,R 1963 17 June Barrad, Alaska C. melanotas Nest wit 4 eggs 2vic. & nest stole S.D Shwovel - a deep depression one edge 1 large polygon with grass blade for a lining. Not surrounded by moss riche- Tuft 1 grass - the letters provided about 46% cover for the eggs. The female off when I was 60' away I gave no disturbing display. Also when she returned when I was at the nest - she did dec. modest run & "head" meaway. Earlier before the nest was discovered, a D flew over her during a hooting display. As he did so, she tilted her body forward, with folded wing Tips pointing at a 40° angle. The D swooped lows but kept on going - I landed about 60' away. The female straightened up- but kept tail cocked for several seconds before resuming normal feeding posture. This may be a submissive type postur - ie indicating that she already has a full clutch (egg - etc) an aggressive posture (who - aggressive forward - D is not known. Second Nest found on plot - with 4 eggs line 1 - no clutch display. Data below,
