Holmes, R 1963 C. melanotos 3. 29 May Barrow, Alaska Evening - 3:07 P.M. (2 together, one alone) on north shore I wold. Sle. As the single O approached a F, he cocked his tail, lowered his antennae & t indolyns, raised the posterior part of the body, wings dropped slightly, chest not expanded but saggin low to the ground. He stood in this posture for about 30-45 sec - with bill open about 5mm - gave a continuous scratchy call - which can best be characterized as ki-ki-ki-ki.... - which did not vary in pitch or frequency [sketch of bird] After sunset. M & started walking fowards him, fencer flew about 6! landed a foot from him on a snow bank. At M's return & began walking towards him, swaying slightly from side to side & changed in vocalization into the modified booting wheel a few on the ground nests. He gave about 10 sec. (M) (in front about 1 foot) & then the F took flight before close with a
