Holmes,R. 1963 Calidris melanotos 27 may Barry, Alaska Now seen m beachridge during afternoon. One 8" Dameh investigate a wounded Sanderling near Wohlschlag Slough + then along the north shore/Wohlschlag, at least 48787+349 were noted as follows - 18", 10"+12, 10"+ 249, 18". The 8",14 indicated some courtship activity. The 8" walked to her, cocked tail, drooped wings slightly, head up, throat baggy, but not inflated, gave several weak ho-ha-ha-ha- In fast succession. The 9 took fly, At. The 8" followed behind giving the gurgling call note. Late, along the Shin/ETSm Lagoon this same sequence was again seen. Di'gai flying, 11 in an erratic chase, low over the fundra. Twice, males were seen to display aerially - flying low over fundra with wings held horizontally even with the back + throat pumping. Due to a light breeze, however, the sound was not heard. i. Courtship + territorial displays are clearly evident on 27 may by birds living in these extended areas of fundra. First individuals were seen by Muller on 25 may (none had been seen on 23 may). 28 may 4 sea feeding together on bluff - west of family Lagoon - 38"+19. No display activity was noted.
