Holmes,R 1962 Frolic melanotos 7 July Barrow, Alaska Flock of 48? in area of polygon + boots - NE1 magnetic station + Bead Ridge. Another group of 12 encountered on B.R. - east 1 magnetic station. 3 & 4 included in our group - were not being persecuted by the 877 - all were feeding actively. The 877 & were collected. FEEDING BEHAVIOR - Three 877 feeding halfway down the north slope of B.R. were watched feeding - & this was recorded on the feeding sheet. Nearly all feeding action was pecking at the surface of the ground +/- at the vegetation [Calabrica ridge slope - thickly covered with 3-4" grass sedge]. Virtually, no probing was noted - the birds would sweep slowly, pecking to both sides - sometimes the head would be lowered - as if to peck & then jerk up - it indicated that whatever was seen - was not food item - just had moved. - Sept seems to play a good part in food selection. In this. This lowering of the head - gives a bobbing appearance to the head. 8 July Flock of 10 at curved Bead Ridge - Cobble ward & between slopes West Wohlleb [illegible] - all 877 - No aggression, no displays.
