Holmes, R. 1962 Evolva melanostos 23 June Barrow, Alaska Morn chasing. A large flock near the receiver site remained in the vicinity all day. By evening, Stevens reported it a somewhat smaller (i.e. 40-50) & located close to middle of at bay. 24 June - Very little activity on the DeSmett plot - However I encountered between 7-8 chasing? were seen. In one case - a single ? flew over a ? - both flying low over the ground in a repeated flight - Suddenly 2 additional ? joined in & all three were giving the aggressive gurgling notes - ears to flying at one another while all were following behind the ?. Finally, the single ? chased me on the two ? it returned four places from where he had come - the ? having already turned & heading in the same direction. Another single subadult seen - but only 2 or 3 ? were involved - both chasing together - a fly flew before the ? (where given the typical preen call note - a high pitched musical note - for the "gurgly" growl by ? in flight - may be homologous). Nest located on the plot with 3 eggs. On gentle slope with several low mounds. The nest was situated in between two mounds (moss) - sparsely surrounded by coarse grass - yet quit (right -
