Holmes, R 1962 Erolia melanotus 9 18 June Barrow, Alaska Several displaying 87 see along beach ridge between the 1st row of antennas & 5th creek. One encounter/2 87 was watched in detail. When 1st seen, they were flying side by side, both displaying - both undulating together. They landed - 3' apart - both assumed the aggressive posture (upright) - stood facing me another - finally one lowered its head - ran forward the other in the hunched-aggressive posture - The aggressor The flew up - then both flew off, in a display flight. After flying - 80 yards - They landed again - scrapping again - locking off - standing upright - dashing again. One bird seemed to be more aggressive - I did most of the charging & chasing - although in the air both birds displaying equally. [Most of the activity - must have been on 87's female - account for his aggressiveness] 20 June Shroonik - several 87s displaying + clumping the north half of the plot - see census sheets. Late in the evening - in the area between the wamnye & The inlet to No Lake - 87s were continuously seen hovering displaying + chasing. No flock was noted. One was seen - countered briefly by a 87 - but paid no attention - showed no nesting signs.
