Holmes, R. 1960 "Erolia" melandotas 26 June Barrow, Alaska a well developed brood patch. She apparently had been flecked from the nest nearby. The 8th - The flock seemed to pay no attention her. 27 June - A flock of 6-80s seen near AAC5. 2 The afternoon, several groups (2-14 birds) 1 males were noted in and near Central Marsh. In the evening a flock was seen on the Bear ridge. There were 14 birds, all being chased about by 1 territorial 8. The 8 would fly to where the flock was feeding, land & then begin to chase them on the ground. The birds would immediately take flight with the 8 in close pursuit. No sounds were heard from the members of the flock, but the settled 8 gave the gurgling-note. After flying up towards the ridge and the circling back to the slope, the flock would settle down again. The 8 would then fly towards them at sometimes over them, giving the hooting call.
